Mattress recycling in northern virginia

How does one recycle mattresses in Northern Virginia? My recent attempt to cut my carbon footprint went sour when I went to the Closet and they couldn't take our mattress due to "health concerns". They recommended trying Salvation (too far away in Manassas) or trashing it in the dumpster. Reluctantly we ended up throwing the mattress in the trash.
